Part One
Image Collages Exercise
Building ‘mood boards’ of who you are
For this first exercise, please assemble four collages of any images you choose that reflect who you are and what you are all about.
To build these collages gather up a handful of representative pictures for each of the four categories below. Ideally, no less than a dozen per category. The more you compile, the more I can detect developing patterns. The exercise is done in pictures to access pre-verbal self-knowledge.
While I prefer you not use the same example in multiple collages, it is fair game to put examples in the ‘wrong’ collage. You can put a person in the icons, or a person in the brands, if you are making the distinction that you admire, say, an athlete’s brand more than their personal character for these purposes. In digital formats feel free to add other media such as video, audio, gifs, links to other content — whatever the platform will permit.
This exercise is generally done by pinning pictures in private Pinterest boards.** If Pinterest works for you, set up the four boards with your initials first then the name of the board —XYZ Inspiring Icons— so they stay together as a set and don’t get mixed up with any other boards.
Then in Board Options (accessible through the … menu at the end of the board name) toggle on "Keep this board secret.”
Whenever you are ready — you don’t need to be done, just whenever you are comfortable with me taking a peek — share the boards with me at Fairfax Image with Mila
**While Pinterest is often the most commonly used format, this exercise can also be done in some alternate digital mood board formats, like Evernote; a slideshow format or a document format, like in Google; even a physical poster board collage using magazine clippings. Please feel free to talk with me about the format that will work best for your preferences.
The image boards to build are . . .
XYZ I am SO NOT . . .
Clip images or other material representing concepts you feel are as far away from you as it is possible to get. Include things to which you would actively resist any affiliation. Include things you would decline to wear, attend, watch, discuss, etc. Anything that falls into the category of, “Oh, no way.” Sometimes it is easier to assert what you aren’t, then recognize the rest by contrast.
XYZ Consumer Brands
Collect a sampling of consumer brands that you appreciate or feel are representative of your style. Note that you don’t necessarily need to use or own these brands. Consider industries such as: Automotive; Fashion/Apparel; Personal Care/Cosmetics; Designers; Home Decor; Food & Beverage including grocery and restaurants; Technology/Electronics; Media including podcasts, magazines, news outlets, platforms; Entertainment/Entertainers including tours, shows, series, movies, studios; Sports/Athletes/Gear; Teams; Organizations; Schools; and others.
XYZ Inspiring People
Cite people you admire or who inspire you in some way. You don’t need to love everything about them, just some specific aspect. They can be contemporary or historical, real or fictional, famous or personal — as long as you can identify what characteristic inspires you.
XYZ Inspiring Icons
Display a collection of art, music, nature settings, architecture, monuments, animals, symbols, or anything that moves you.
